"How do we get therapy for this little girl?"

About: Suffolk PCT

(as a parent/guardian),

This is ongoing. We have been trying to get therapy for my step daughter for 4 1/2 years. She has been referred by the GP and her social worker. All the referrals have been turned down, because she doesn't fit the criteria. The referral was sent to the childrens commissioners and they refused but no reason was given. We are now in the process of trying to get help from the PCT. We don't understand why the NHS isn't helping her.

We have received the following response from NHS Suffolk:-

We can see that you are very frustrated and would like to offer you to chance to use our complaints service.

Very generally, I’d like to reassure you that this is a priority of the new governing bodies which are due to take over the planning of healthcare from 1 April 2013 – Ipswich and East Clinical Commissioning Group http://www.ipswichandeastsuffolkccg.nhs.uk/and West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group http://www.westsuffolkcommissioning.co.uk/.

The new CCGs commissioned a national expert to look into this. This has not been done before. It will cover all levels of need as we know that some children/young people don’t meet the criteria for the services we currently commission. We are doing this work jointly with Suffolk County Council’s social care to ensure we understand all levels of need across Suffolk and also have a Children and Adult Mental Health Service needs assessment to make sure that we understand our local population – not just starting from what we have.

I hope this helps and please do contact our complaints team on 01473 770150.

Barbara McLean

Director of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality for NHS Suffolk

Update posted by frodoandsam (a parent/guardian)

I am already dealing with the Suffolk PCTcomplaints team. I am still awaiting a response from my letter in early January.

This child has a documented need for psychology and it is the NHS's job under the NHS Act to meet that need.

Your response does not help because you give no indication when this child's needs will be met.
