My dad had been ventilated with covid for 3 months with challenging disease of his lungs and we were told it would be nigh on impossible to get him off the ventilator. Towards the end of April he had another complication and we were told that this was likely the final insult but the Golden Jubilee cardiothoracic team had been referred the case to ensure there were no further options available. To our incredible fortune, Mr Kostoulas was oncall for thoracics in the Jubilee that day. He accepted my dad's case, and my my dad was flown down to Glasgow for his surgery. Mr Kostoulas met with me face to face to ascertain my dad's health prior to covid and also explain the surgery. This was at 7pm at night and well above what was required of him. The following day he operated on my dad for several hours and did an amazing job. Less than a week after his surgery, my dad was off a ventilator and breathing completely on his own. Mr Kostoulas kept complete control of the care of my dad's care and specifically his chest drains for 3 weeks after his surgery despite my dad moving to another hospital and him actually being on holiday for some of this time. Other surgeons have told us they would not have taken on my dad as he was so high risk. We are eternally grateful to Mr Kostoulas for his exceptional skill in giving my dad the opportunity he did and for his amazing care of my dad after his surgery and his excellent communication with ourselves throughout. We can never thank him enough but having the opportunity to spend fathers dad with my dad (albeit still in hospital but making amazing progress toward a full recovery!) prompted me to ensure it is widely known his endeavours and skill were very much appreciated by myself, my sister, my mum and our entire family.
"Excellent surgeon who went above and beyond"
