"QEUH parking and baby scan"

About: Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50) / Maternity Out Patient Department

(as a service user),

I recently went for my first maternity ultrasound at the QEUH. Overall, I had a good experience with the care I received and was grateful to be able to have my partner there at the scan. However, there are a couple of things which made this experience less favorable.

The parking at QEUH is appalling, I think everyone knows that and I appreciate it is a difficult issue to resolve. We spent at least 20 minutes in search of a space, doing laps through the multi-storey not realising the top 3 levels are for staff only, this could have been more clear. There is a simple way to improve everyone's experience - install vehicle detection sensors. Car parks all over the world use these and it makes it easy to know how many spaces are available even before you go in, it would make everyone's experience with the limited parking so much better. I am already dreading going back for my next appointment due to the parking, what would we do if I was coming to give birth and urgently needed a space?

The other thing that would have improved my experience drastically is the ability to receive a video of your ultrasound. This is done extremely easily privately, and photos/videos are sent by email, reducing paper use. Why can this not be offered to women with the NHS? I do completely understand the strict instruction not to take any video, but the memory of my baby jumping in my womb is already fading and I so wish I could treasure it more. I know this is not the purpose of the appointment, I completely appreciate it is a health service but if you are able to provide a printed, surely it wouldn't be too difficult to send these by email instead and include a video? And it would save printing/paper resource? I don't imagine my suggestion will go anywhere, but in 5-10 years time I hope things like this will improve.

Dear antx

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience and I would like to reassure you that we very much value any feedback and where possible use this to influence change and improve the experience for women and their families.

I am glad your overall experience was positive and have shared your comments regarding parking with our facilities staff who will respond to you.

With regard to you suggestions for scanning we have already been looking at this and I am pleased to let you know that when you come for your 20 week scan you will be able to record a small mini clip of the scan on your phone.

We are also very close to the full launch of the maternity app for BadgerNet which will give woman access to their pregnancy records and as part of this scan images (not video as yet) will be digitally sent to the App on their phone. This will reduce paper and give a quality format for women that will not fade.

I hope this information gives you some reassurance that we are moving forward in this digital world and I am sure as technology progresses we will be able to enhance further what we can provide.

Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy journey.

Best Wishes

Evelyn

Dear Evelyn,

Thank you very much for your prompt response. I am delighted and pleasantly surprised to hear of these advances, it will make such a difference to me at my next appointment and has relieved some of the disappointment I was feeling and I'm sure it will make a big difference to many other women. I will ask about this at my 20 week scan.

I look forward to hearing from facilities too thanks for passing on my comments.

Dear Antx

I’m sorry to hear of the difficulties you experienced parking at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Royal Hospital for Children campus.

As you have mentioned, demand for parking at peak times is more intense than ever. This is due to the relaxation of the rules during the pandemic, the rise of patient activity again, and the reintroduction of visiting. However, from Monday 28th June, staff will no longer be able to park in patient and visitor bays and this should help ease parking.

I note that you are dreading your next appointment and I would like to reassure you that patients and visitors will be able to park in any parking bay when the ground and first floor are full. There is also usually a parking attendant at the entrance to the car park to help assist patients and especially ones in labour.

Take Care
