"Cannot get through on the phone"

About: University Hospital Lewisham / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

It seems this hospital has no human receptionists answering telephones, but just uses an answerphone mailbox which no one checks! I have tried calling the Gynaecology Outpatients department numerous times to rebook an appointment after I was sent a letter confirming an appointment for the next day (needless to say I received the latter too late and missed the appointment).

Alas, no one ever answers the phone and when I do leave my name, date of birth and email address and landline number, and the answerphone message says the mailbox is manned and people are called back, I have never once been contacted by a staff member. Today I contacted the PALS team in the hope I could lodge a complaint, but not even that phone number elicits a pick up from someone.

Imagine if you lost a relative in this hospital, and were bereaved, and needed to call PALS for an explanation about their death, only to be put through to an answerphone? Well, I expect that is the experience of the poor people who contact this hospital. Seeing as I cannot get through to anyone to make a complaint, I will write this, sending my comments into the ether in the hope that some responsible member of the medical establishment might see this.

As I notice other people have had similar problems, going back two years or more, it is disappointing to know that this hospital still has not got its act together. I feel this is totally chaotic.

Thank you for your comments, I am sorry to hear of your experience contacting our Gynaecology Outpatient department. We have had admin staff shortages recently which has had an impact on staff available to answer all phone calls however all answerphone messages received should receive a call back and if unable to reach the patient a message should be left if that option is available. This issue will be raised with the Women’s Health admin team. Please feel free to contact me direct on 0203 192 6730 and I will facilitate with rebooking your appointment.

kind regards

Shevone Edwards

Assistant Service Manager for Women’s Health
