"Birth"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Maternity

(as the patient),

I had a traumatic birth nearly nine months ago that I’m still struggling with. I wasn’t given pain relief for a long time as I wasn’t far on enough, even though I was struggling and asked multiple times. I felt so defeated, I ended up having very high blood pressure and there are bits that I can’t remember as I was completely incapacitated and unable to consent or understand anything. I also had to go back in a week later with an infection in which I sent my baby home. Not having my partner there was devastating with both stats and contributed to a traumatic experience. It made me feel completely helpless as I struggled to look after my daughter alone.

Dear soilkh47,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I was very sorry to read about your traumatic birth experience 9 months ago which you are still struggling with now, we certainly do not expect any of our new mums to feel like this. If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient and Family Experience (Complaints) Team using the details below. I will make the team aware of your feedback so you will not have to explain everything again, you just need to refer to this story. The team will be able to ensure your experience is investigated with the services which provided your care.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We value all types of feedback because it allows us to learn and implement change where required to try to ensure all women's experiences of maternity care are positive.

I would really like the opportunity to look into the care you received further so that where it fell below the standards that you and we would expect, we can investigate and initiate change.

If you would like to contact me formally of informally, you can do this on sarah.harvey-hurst@nhs.net or through our patient experience team.

With Kind Regards

Sarah Harvey-Hurst, Maternity Matron
