"Day care ward"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Day Surgery Unit

(as the patient),

Firstly I can't praise enough the theatre staff and ward sisters for their care and attention.

My gripe is that being asked to arrive at 7am and my biopsy scheduled for the last of the day, which in this case was 4. 30pm. During this period I was not allowed food or water having had my last food and drink the evening before at 8pm. As I was anxious and nervous about the procedure before arriving, to spend the day doing nothing made me more and more apprehensive which was evident to the numerous consultants that approached me during the day and even more evidence when I finally arrived at the theatre having support from the staff there which can be verified how stressed and anxious I was.

I finally had a sandwich and coffee at 8. 30pm and arrived home at 9. 20pm after a 20 minute journey. A day I would not want to repeat.

Dear Steve17

Firstly we would like to convey our appreciation for your kind comments about the care and attention you received whilst a patient on our ward. This is always of paramount importance when caring for all patients.

Unfortunately the surgeon and anaesthetists need patients to arrive early so that they can be seen before surgery. They can then plan the days operating list accordingly and hopefully prevent any delays. All patients need to be starved prior to surgery and it is sometimes difficult to estimate a time that you may then go to surgery, hence sometimes you may be starved or waiting for your operation for longer.

When you have had your operation we need to wait until you are awake enough and that it is safe for you to eat and drink.

I’m so sorry that the delay you incurred during your stay made you more anxious but thank you for your comments both positive and negative.

Kind regards

Liz Balderston

Deputy Sister
