"Colposcopy LLETZ"

About: Borders General Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I had been in for Biopsy’s on my cervix and then had to go back for LLETZ treatment on my cervix. My initial biopsy results letter never came through until a few months later, it was only an appointment letter I received so I was unaware of what I was having done when I attended my second appointment following my biopsy. The doctors and nurses were great during my treatment however I feel as though all the pros and cons of the treatment were adequately relayed to me. Following treatment no discharge information was given to me and I ended up having complications and was unsure who to ring. I spoke to the colposcopy clinic and was advised there wasn’t a nurse available to speak to me. I ended up ringing my GP who was unsure as my notes hadn’t been received through for my treatment, however my GP gave me antibiotics. The fact I wasn’t given any discharge information away I was unsure what to expect afterwards and didn’t know if the symptoms I was experiencing were normal. This left me feeling rather upset and confused. Following my LLETZ procedure I was given results a few month later (I was initially told it would be 2 weeks I had to chase this up numerous times with the secretary) that I had indeterminate CIN. The doctor rang me with my results however I felt the conversation was rushed and I had no opportunity to ask questions. I will be ringing my GP for further clarity on my results, as it’s impossible to speak to a nurse/doctor to discuss what my results mean properly.   I wish no other female is left feeling this confused and upset. This could have been avoided with better communication and discharge information.

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience, and that you felt unsure about what to expect and who to call after treatment.

Although post treatment information in the sheet which comes out with your appointment, I completely agree it would have been useful for us to have asked you if you needed another copy of this before you left after your treatment, and we are going to make sure women are offered this after treatment in the future.

Normally it takes about 2 weeks for our results to come back from the lab, and about another 2 weeks to get results back to you. Occasionally it can take longer for the labs to get back to us, especially if results are tricky to interpret.

We’d be really happy to organise a phone appointment with you to discuss your results with a bit more time available if you’d find that helpful? You can organise this by calling the Gynae secretaries via the hospital switchboard.

Kind Regards

Dr Rodger
