"Adult inpatient unit"

About: Riverdale Grange Clinic

(as a service user),

I felt that the unit was not promoting recovery. There was only one group each week on goal setting. This meant that you had to keep yourself occupied all week with little to no support. There was however each fortnight a trip to fired arts. I have had two admissions the first one I wasn’t ready for recovery the second the staff had changed.

From my experience I found the consultant to be rude and very cold showing little compassion and making decisions based on a 10 minute weekly ward round. Self harm was heavily prevalent amongst patients with no help to prevent this and little staff knowledge of wound care.

The chef during the week however was brilliant and so were the two eldest support workers. You were most of the time left to your own devises where exercise was rife. One to ones with your assigned workers were far and few between. Support at the table was minimal and with no offer of replacement you could leave as much food and refuse as often as you wanted so gaining weight was very rarely within the marzipan guidelines.

During lockdown there was little infection control with no masks or scrubs. The healthy ways with food group was not beneficial if not made your eating disorder worse and was only 4 weeks maybe two or three times a year. The meal plan did not account for blood sugars dropping during refeed as you went a long time between meals without anything in between. The snack list did not promote choices.

There was little individualised care and little patient centre care. At a low BMI you could go out for walks and the area was very hilly and physical observations were not carried out appropriately or often enough. I would not recommend this place unless changes and improvements were made.

We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed by your experience at Riverdale. We work really hard to ensure patient care and treatment is person centred, recovery focused and needs led.

To assure you, the safety of our patients and staff is paramount and therefore we strictly follow PHE guidelines and infection prevention and control at all times including the use of PPE.

We would like to offer you a telephone conversation with myself so I can understand the exact nature of your concerns as we are always keen to receive feedback and improve our service. If this is something you would find helpful please contact me directly at the hospital.

Vikki Rodgers, Service Manager
