"Discharge from an inpatient stay"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a carer),

My elderly Dad was admitted as an emergency to Ward 11c. He was treated very well By ward staff and was offered the choice the next day of staying in another night and having the urgent CT scan suggested by the consultant (they suspect a cancer diagnosis) which was booked for him the following day or being discharged and having it as an outpatient.

He is of a generation who would not dream of taking up a bed if not necessary. So of course he chose discharge. He may not have fully understood the implications of this.

He was then told on the door as he was leaving that the scan should be sometime in the next 2 weeks and the outpatient appointment would be sent to him in about 6 weeks.

I do not see why a scan booked for him, for which he was prepared to return the next day was cancelled with a vague plan for the future. The radiology department also found this a strange decision and said he could have had it as an OP, but by this time it had been given to someone else.

Surely patients and relatives  should not be put in this position?
