"An opportunity to practise preventative, multi-disciplinary care was missed."

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Accident and emergency Tameside General Hospital / General surgery

(as a carer),

My wife attended Tameside Hospital for a perforated eardrum graft. Previously, we had attended a pre-operative appt during which potential side effects were discussed. Despite knowing that my wife is epileptic, the possibility of a seizure was not discussed.

The operation went fine, I think, but three days later, my wife had a serious seizure, which, we were told at Royal Oldham Hospital's A&E dept, was quite possibly caused by the hangover from the general anaesthetic she'd received a few days before.

Why weren't we warned that there was this risk? The seizure has set my wife back weeks and she simply cannot afford to have any more seizures - her brain is injured enough without (presumably avoidable) seizures.

Would you like to help the hospital to improve its services further? We are currently looking for patients and carers to become involved in a development called “Patient Stories”. We want to know more about our services from the point of view of those who received them – what was good, bad, what could be improved, what should be changed. Want to know more about what’s involved? Please contact John Goodenough, Director of Nursing at
