I recently brought an elderly neighbour who has poor mobilty to Queen Margaret Hospital for an appointment. I consider myself to be fit and healthy so thought selecting and using one of the wheelchairs provided wouldn't cause too much problem...…..wrong!
The foot rests would not stay in place long enough for her to get in the chair (tried 2) then when wheeling the chair it was not easy to either push or pull it and go in a straight line. I felt like i'd done a work out by the time we got back to the car!
I realise in the grand scheme of things perhaps wheelchairs aren't top priority but its the little things that just make life that bit easier. It caused added stress and exertion to a reasonably fit person ,I can't imagine how my neighbour would have managed had it been her elderly husband that accompanied her to the appointment.
All staff encountered were very professional
