I am nearly 60 years old and have a number of long term health conditions including deteriorating and impaired vision. Each time I have attended I am waiting for several hours. Left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing. Got seen by one doctor first and a number of drops put in my eyes which really sting with no proper explanation and communication. Then told to wait in waiting area. Then call you in and shine extremely bright lights in your eyes knowing your sensitivity to light. Then called by another doctor who duplicated the process. They don't explain what they are doing or what they have found. Very quick to discharge you and they don't give you anything in writing to say what they've done and what the results of tests are. They make you feel like you are a guinea pig being experimented on and feel worse than when you came in. They are not patient focussed and don't care about you as a patient you are simply an NHS number to them. As an elderly and vulnerable person I don't feel I was treated with respect understanding of my problems and lack of dignity. I have all my working life paid my national insurance contributions and when I now need proper respectful dignified treatment and being fully involved in my care and have matters properly and clearly explained to me in simple terms I am not getting a proper patient focussed service. Waiting for hours and then when they do see you everything is very rushed. I would not recommend the eye department at St James Hospital to anyone based on my personal experience of the way I have been treated.
"Disorganised - waiting for hours - not patient..."
