"The lack of provision is concerning"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I had planned a home birth. When I went into labour I was told there were not enough staff on to have a home birth so I would have to come into the Bracken Centre

I advised I was hypnobirthing. It was all over my notes as well. I was told I was in the latent stages of labour either that or I handled pain well and sent home. My labour progressed well and I went into the second stage soon after.

My husband could not get through to anyone on the telephone numbers we had been provided. He ended up calling 999 and an ambulance crew came to assist us. The midwives followed soon after. I did end up having my home birth and the midwives who attended the birth were great but staffing issues need to be addressed.

After making a formal complaint I was advised that the midwives do not have access to your paper notes before you go into labour. Hence why I ended up having a student at the birth of my child when I had specifically asked not to have. The lack of provision is concerning and something needs to be done at a higher level.

Dear HypnoBirthingMom

I am so sorry to read your story. Having a baby is such a special time for the whole family and I am sad to read that you feel angry ignored and let down. We want to provide safe care to you in your labour and there are occasions when midwives are not available and providing that safe care means inviting you into hospital. I know how disappointing and unsettling that must be when you have planned a home birth.

Somerset maternity services are working towards the Better Births recommendations to provide care in small locally based teams, but this will take some time to put in place and does not make your experience of birth any better.

I am pleased that you did have your home birth and that the midwives were lovely.

Thank you for taking the time as a new mum to give your feedback. Your voice and views are really important to us to in making changes to the service.

I hope you and your baby are doing well and that you are enjoying family life.

If you would like to contact me directly please email me at: sallyann.king@tst.nhs.uk. I would welcome the opportunity to have a chat with you in more depth.
