I was due to have a quadruple bypass and was telephoned to ask if I could come in a month earlier than my appointment with 4 days notice. I rearranged my life, work and transport for the 90 minute journey and was admitted to derriford on good Friday. There were no beds on Clearbrook ward so after being seen by the surgeon and anaesthetist, I was sent to the Lodge to stay the night. I couldn't eat after midnight and was collected at 8am and taken back to the hospital. After another wait I was found a room, given a gown, and left on my own to wait for 3 hours until my surgery time.
5 minutes before my time, one of the surgical team came down and said the op was cancelled because now there were no beds in ITU.
I am diabetic (not insulin) and was hungry and thirsty. All they had was biscuits and a banana, not great for me. They did provide a meal at lunchtime but it was the previous patients order. I had to wait 3 more hours for a relative to pick me up and during that time I had an angina attack, which is probably due to the stress, I took my spray and told a passing nurse in the corridor. Someone came to take my blood pressure which was raised and do an ecg, no idea what the result of that was. She wrote the info on a scrap of paper because she couldn't find my notes. No one came back to check on me in the following hour and a half, to see if my pain had eased or gone, or tell me anything. When my relative arrived I was told I could go. I was made to feel like the op being cancelled was my fault and I was an inconvenience especially when I had my angina. How can they ask you to come in over a bank holiday weekend if there is not enough staff or beds available. Did they not know it was going to be busy in a&e on a bank holiday, like every other year. I have been told they can't do the op until the 19th May now, which was my original date, not this week as was suggested by the ward staff. I am told the hospital is in crisis, so why bring my op forward. This has messed up my work, who have had to take on someone to replace me for 3 months, it means another month with no wages coming in, my son has had to rearrange his commitments because he was coming down to look after me, after the surgery, they don't seem to have any idea the devastation and stress all this can cause. I could get a phone call for a cancellation and maybe next week they might know if they can do it sooner than the 19th. In the meantime my health deteriorates which increases the risks associated with the surgery or of me having a heart attack before the op is done. As this is the only "local" hospital that can do the procedure, I am then given a ridiculous patient survey asking if I would recommend the hospital to a friend, no I wouldn't, but I will have to go back, if I want this life saving operation.
