"Kindness, Compassionate and Genuine"

About: Royal Derby Hospital / Upper gastrointestinal sugery

(as a service user),

My story is in relation to the support I have received from the bariatric nurses, Anna and her colleague Kim.

Both of these nurses, have shown me nothing but kindness, understanding, empathy and compassion. I started my bariatric journey back in 2012, when I entered the hospital for the first appointment, I was scared of being judged due to my huge body frame and the even bigger BMI. I was scared to see the shock on their faces. How wrong could I of been?

They welcomed me with a smile, no comment on my size or weight, they just accepted me for the person I was, they listened to my story and empathised with the reasons behind my emotional eating. No judgement was made nor was I compared to other people’s experiences. The time was for me and me alone.

Following each appointment the support continued, even when I did not believe in myself, they continued to encourage, motivate and guide me into a more positive mind-set. Looking back I really appreciated Kim’s, honesty and direct communication, I needed that approach at times.

After a while, Anna became the main nurse and her listening skills are second to none. Anna might of only have a little time per appointment, but I never felt rushed, I had the opportunity to share my successes and look for support and guidance on areas that needed attention. Reminding me of why I was there, to become healthier for my children to be free of back pain. Those reminders really helped

After two and a half years, I lost almost 13 stones,  while I acknowledge the weight loss, was due to my continued willpower and  determination, deciding to make better lifestyle choices…. but to also be brave enough to face and tackle inner demons that were behind my poor eating habits

I've had a few issues with the band over the years, but Anna and Kim were only a phone call away and they were on hand to offer support and offer an appointment when and where necessary. I last saw Anna this week, (which is always a pleasure) Anna still continues to greet me with a smile, reminds me of how proud she is of my weight loss and tells me how fabulous I am looking!! Confidence boost or what!!

So, it has been 7 years since I had my band fitted, I have maintained a healthy weight, my diet consists of rainbow food, plus the odd Chocolate bar!! (sssh)  I exercise daily and I’ve continued to enjoy life, especially with my children. I can run around playing football, jump on a trampoline, fit on a swing in the park, go swimming without fear of being an embarrassment, but most of all, I can be ME... without the fear of being judged of the way I look.

Please can this be forwarded to both Anna and Kim.

Thank you Girls!! Xx
