My Dad (48) was transferred to QEUH from RAH in the middle of the night after he had worsening symptoms of cauda equina syndrome. He has been managing this condition for over a year and was on the urgent surgery list for a spinal decompression. On transfer his MRI showed little change. Since this result he was treated as if he was wasting space on the ward, nursing staff in particular were extremely rude. They then arranged for him to go back to RAH, I asked if there was someone I could speak to about this as his consultant was based in QEUH ortho and hadn't been informed of my Dads admission. The nurse who I spoke to did not offer any help and instead suggested my Dad go home until his surgery in 4 months time, my Dad at this point couldn't stand unaided.
My Dad was transferred back to RAH where he spent 12 days of them aimlessly trying to get physio to get him on his feet so he could be discharged. He was continually treated like a bed blocker, with staff making comments which we felt mocked his mobility and need for breakthrough pain relief.
Eventually they listened to us and contacted the consultant who immediately arranged surgery for the next working day. My Dad was then transferred back to QEUH. The consultant was fantastic. He also explained that the original scan was a bad situation so any change on top of that was dire. My Dad had his spinal surgery which went well and is now keen to get his strength back and get back to work.
