"Tooth extraction"

About: Victoria Hospital / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as a service user),

Yesterday I had surgery to remove a tooth.

This tooth has been giving me pain for around 3 months. My dentist had tried but due to complications was unable to extract

The tooth. I was referred to the Oral and maxilofacial team. I have to say I felt a bit silly having to attend the hospital for a tooth

But I was relieved as I had been in pain for so long and it was affecting my life and my stomach with all the pain killers.

I was seen at clinic and assured that the complications for the extraction at the dentist would easily be overcome in the hospital theatres. I felt better already as I had no idea what would happen to me when my dentist couldn’t help me anymore and I was in constant pain.

Everything was explained to me by Miss Dhillon and I was listed for surgery.

I was relieved that this nightmare was coming to an end but extremely nervous.

I have now had the tooth out and I have to say my experience was amazing.

I was looked after with care and compassion by all the staff. I was put at ease and assured I mattered even though it was just a tooth.

Stacy at reception knew I was coming which put me at ease from the start. Irene admitted me and assured me I would be ok. I was visited by Vicky from the anaesthetic team who helped by telling me they knew all about the complications with anaesthetic at the dentist and they could cope easily with this in theatres. My nerves were starting to subside and I was now confident this nightmare would soon be over.

Lastly before I went to theatre I was visited by the oral and maxillofacal team and everything about the surgery was explained.

So I have now went from terrified to a bit anxious with the support of the wonderful staff. Irene got me ready and off I went.

I can remember being in the anaesthetic room and Vicky was there which was great as we had already spoken. I remember going into theatre and I saw Miss Dhillon from clinic and the surgeon Mr Bhopal who had discussed the surgery with me on the ward. I don’t remember anything more apart from waking up in recovery with a lovely nurse looking after me. Sorry I can’t remember her name.

I went back to the ward and Irene was waiting for me constantly checking I was ok very reassuring.

My nightmare was over!! Thank you to all of our professional caring nhs staff. You all do an absolutely wonderful job!!
