"visit to A&E"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

My sister and I recently visited the A&E dept during the night with our 95yr old father,

The room in which we were placed had suction equipment left uncleaned(covered in blood) from the last patient.

Not one member of staff introduced themselves or asked my father what he wanted to be called.

When i pointed this out a member of staff gave me a lecture that they were obliged to call him by his legal name,i work in the NHS and far as I'm aware staff should ask how the patient wishes to be addressed.

When my father asked who this woman was we were told nurse practitioner-still no name.

My father spent the whole night on a trolley until he was transferred to a ward bed at lunch time the next day.No information was given and there was no time to discuss anything before we were transferred to the ward. The nurse on the ward was however very helpful gave us lots of information and actually listened to us.

I'm very sorry to hear this and imagine this was a very worrying time for you and your sister. I will feed your comments back to the team as clearly it is unacceptable for equipment not to have been cleaned. I also apologise that your felt you were not given information about your fathers care or that the member of staff caring for you did not introduce themselves. Thank you for your feedback and we will certainly look at where we can make improvements going forward.
