Recently I was supported for depression by the wonderful staff at Cathcart Street Practice and met with Dr Farrell, Dr McClusker and Dr Phin. Initially I had phone contact with Sister Lydon when I was very anxious about my health (not realising at the time it was down to my anxiety) and she expertly picked this up over the phone and firmly but kindly encouraged me to arrange an appointment with one of the GPs. I refused to accept a diagnosis of depression as I was convinced that just didn’t happen to people like me. Each time I visited the GPs I broke down in tears as at times they were the only people I’d spoken to in days at a time, I felt like I was never going to get better and felt devastated that I had to take time off work. With the support and kindness from the staff I was able to build myself back up again, found the courage to arrange counselling through work and took the medication I was prescribed and now fit and ready to return to work after 4 months.
I can’t thank the staff enough, they might not think they made much of a difference but not being judged and just having someone to listen was the most important part of my recovery. On reflection I was irrational, erratic and paranoid but my thoughts and needs were dealt with sensitively and with compassion. I could cry just writing this, thank you all so much for helping me get my life back.
