Following 2 heart attacks just prior to easter, I was transferred from the ED at the Royal to Glenfield Hospital. The Angiogram proved that I needed a triple bypass. Emotionally I was drained having the thought of my heart being stopped. The care and support I got from Wards 33, 31, 34 and ICU was brilliant.
I could see that the nursing staff were very busy and I did my best not to disturb them too much. The job they do with very little resource was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
What can I say about the cardiologist that treated me. As a pharmacist I always try and empathise with lots of people I come across. The thought of a surgeon and the supporting staff to operate for 4 hours is immense and they do this day in and day out.
I am alive today because of these special people. They have given me my life back and at the age of 50, I intend to live for ever.
Altogether, I was in Hospital for just over 3 weeks and they would not release me until, i was 100%. After my surgery, I had developed an infection and a haematoma in my leg (where the vein was harvested from). I was ready to go home but the doctors would not let me leave until my white cell count and inflammatory markers (CRP) were down back to normal. If I had left earlier, I would have ended up back into hospital.
The support i also received from the Activate Your Heart and Diabetes specialists was also brilliant.
I wish i could name all of the staff that looked after me. I don't think I could ever do a 12.5 hour shift everyday. These people are doing the job because they really care about their patients. Not once did i sense any member of staff were only their to do their bit and go home. You can't get empathy like this anywhere.
Thank you for saving my life. Dharm Parmar
