"Why the health service appears to be in crisis."

About: Derriford Hospital / General surgery

On being admitted to the surgery assessment ward around 5pm, I was soon introduced to the nursing. staff who would look after me and help me get settled. Soon a doctor came to see me and after examining me I was informed that I would be sent for a Cat Scan which took place at 11pm that evening, so far so good. I was moved to Crownhill ward for further investigations. I was advised to keep mobile, while I was away from the ward the medical team visited the ward. As there was only one other patient in the ward, so the were not there long. The ward Sister said they would be returning later to see me to tell me the results of the cat scan,How ever that did not happen and I would remain nil by mouth, allowed sips of water as I was due to go for

Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy to locate the exact site of the internal bleed. I was told that the porters would being to talk me for the procedure. Once again it did not happen. So far that is 52 hours without any food, was put on a drip I lost count of how many bags I was given, about 10pm Saturday.the night nurse gave me a sandwich and a cup of tea. Sunday I had 3 meals supper was about 6pm.The nursing staff did their very best to keep me pain free. There appeared to be a lack of communication between the doctors and the nursing staff. Monday morning I was back nil by mouth another day and still no Endoscopy, I was told that it would be in the morning, A porter came for me at 4.20pm, by the time I was bought back to the ward I had missed supper. The two investigation procedures that I had together amounted to a total of about 20 minutes, apart from regular vital sign checks and blood tests no other investigations were carried out. Wednesday was spent with checks and more blood tests, Then on Thursday at about 9am I was told by a army doctor that I could go home and have the rest of the investigations would be carried as a out patient. I then at to wait under gone 6pm for a discharge letter and medication, and as I was asked to leave the ward I was given no meals. I strongly believe that all the hard work of the nursing staff is made all the more harder by lack communication between the medical teams and the nurses. Which means patients are in hospital a lot longer that required, leading to bed shortages and admissions being delayed. The medical treatment when delivered is first class.
