I am so glad that I attended the relaxation class that was held at the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. For me, this proved to be one of the most invaluable classes that I attended throughout my pregnancy as it really helped me prepare for labour.
As a first time mum I was very apprehensive about experiencing labour as you hear so many peoples' horror stories (against my will, but they tell you anyway! ) but by attending the relaxation class this allowed approach labour more optimistically.
The class itself, which was run by the lovely Geraldine and Mo, was really informative giving me an insight into the science behind the positive effects of relaxation for the body and mind. We also engaged in some practical relaxation exercises and techniques which were very enjoyable and great practise for labour. The class was given extremely helpful notes which contained relaxation techniques along with YouTube video links to practice relaxation at home prior to labour.
When it came down to my own labour I put the relaxation techniques I had learned into practise and I slipped into my own zone. I stood up most of my labour as I knew gravity was my best friend. I managed to give birth to my baby on gas and air only and I believe that it was down to me executing the relaxation techniques that I had learned within the class. Also, I must say the labour ward staff were fantastic and on the ball!
I would highly recommend these classes. I feel that relaxation techniques don't just help with labour but can help with every day-to-day life.
