"Concerned about hygeine"

About: Queen Marys Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I attended the urgent care centre last month after injuring my foot. There was a visible lump with swelling and bruising around the affected area and I was finding it painful to walk. I was triaged within half an hour by a nurse who proceeded to touch my foot, without wearing gloves, and then carried on typing without washing their hands or applying alco-gel. They then told me that there was no bone to break in the affected area. As a staff nurse myself I know that there is in fact a bone there albeit hard to break, but given the amount of swelling and bruising thought it was best to check it out. A couple of hours later I was seen by the ENP who confirmed that although there is a bone there it is hard to break and provided me with some simple exercises and advised me to rest. I was concerned by the un-compassionate attitude of the triage nurse and their infection control standards.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

I am sorry that your visit to the Urgent Care Centre at Queen Mary's was not a positive experience.

All our staff are highly trained and we expect a certain amount of professionalism at all time and we expect all patients to be treated with compassion and dignity.

All comments are discussed with the wider team for learning and training purposes and to improve the Service we offer to patients.

Once again please accept my apologes and I do hope you are recovering from your injury.

Kind Regards

Sue Hopkins
