"I felt so calm and actually excited to meet my baby"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I'm sorry this is so late as my baby is now almost 5 months old but I wanted to tell my story.

I went in to have my second baby by elective c section in December 2016. I had a very traumatic birth with my first daughter and also had a bad cough/chest so I wasn't feeling very optimistic about this. Everyone I spoke to was so reassuring and made me feel a bit more positively about the experience. The section it's self went so well, it was a lot better than my first emergency section and all the staff in the theatre were amazing, I felt so calm and actually excited to meet my baby. I had a big blood loss and there were extra people called in to help but my mind was taken off that by the lovely people and my new baby girl. I want to say a big thank you to Alan as he was fantastic, he asked me what music I wanted and chatted with me to keep my mind off it. I was in high dependency after the birth but I received some fantastic care and found it so much easier to bond with my baby than I did with my first baby. I want to thank kylie for looking after me during 2 nigh shifts, kylie was fantastic, she made sure I was looked after and took care of my baby when I couldn't manage. It was my 30th birthday while I was there and kylie let my mum come in to see me and organised tea and coffee for us and she put my birthday cards up for me. It was so nice of her as seeing my mum really cheered me up when I wasn't feeling great! When I got to the ward I was greeted by some other lovely staff but I can't remember their names. They surprised me by bringing me a birthday cake and singing happy birthday to me. It was so nice of them, I thought my birthday was just going to be forgotten about but it's a birthday I'll never forget!

Thank you so much to everyone and if I ever return to have another baby I'll feel a lot happier knowing I'll be looked after.

Dear Lh1986

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story and it is never too late - you must be really busy with two small children. I am so glad that you had a better experience this time despite your understandable anxieties about it following your previous birth - it is lovely to hear how the staff can make such a difference and often it is with the wee things such as your choice of music in theatre that can make you feel more relaxed. Alan and Kylie will be delighted to hear how you felt about the care they offered, as will all the teams in theatre, recovery and the postnatal wards.

What a way to celebrate your 30th birthday and I'm so glad that it is memorable for you in a good way.

Jenny
