I lost both of my legs above knee in 2014, and the NHS has been incredible in helping me recover from this. I was in the ICU and then the burn ward at the glasgow royal and the doctors saved my life on several instances. The staff in the burn ward helped me a lot with my recovery as well as physio to get a bit more independent in my wheelchair and ready for living back home. The district nurses were very good with taking care of my wounds when I was back home too.
I've been going to Westmarc at the southern general for 2 years now and the care I've received is amazing. They have really stuck by me while I've struggled to overcome several health and pain issues that were holding be back from prosthetics. I'm happy to say that I'm now walking independently on prosthetics nearly all day and I couldn't have done it without all the help I've received from these different sides of the NHS.
My only complaint is the ambulance service. They are a really good service to have and it would have been difficult/expensive to make my own way to all my appointments. But there is definitely room for improvement. There have been several times where they have cancelled my transport without me knowing until I phoned to check. This as well as many times having to wait for several hours at Westmarc to go home after an already long day. I think they have made some changes to help this and it doesn't happen quite as often these days but I think they could still improve on their service for sure.
