"The best of care."

About: Arrowe Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

I broke my femur outside on the evening of 2nd March and was attended very quickly by the ambulance crew, who swung into action like a well oiled machine. Within ten minutes they had the pain under control and after some procedures in the ambulance, I was taken to Arrowe Park hospital and admitted to A&E.

Within the hour they had my full history and had noted existing medical conditions, administered pain medication and had splinted the leg whilst I awaited surgery.

I was admitted at approximately 9pm and by midnight I was in a bed on the trauma ward. I had my operation to pin the leg the following day, and during my 12 day stay I had regular physio and received great care from all of the staff on the ward.

Aftercare was arranged before I was discharged and the district nurse team have attended regularly.

Unfortunately I was referred back to the hospital by my GP, with a suspected blood clot a week after discharge.

I was seen the same day, scanned and quickly diagnosed with a mid calf blood clot.

I received the appropriate medication and the staff in the DVT clinic were immensely helpful, arranging a home visit the following week, for follow up.

The hospital also arranged for an occupational therapist to visit, who was extremely helpful and I have received extra equipment, as well as a referral for the musculoskeletal physio clinic.

I have been seen in the fracture clinic since discharge and have another appointment in a couple of weeks.

I was very impressed with my treatment and care, throughout my hospital stay.

I have a pre existing disability and my wife is in a wheelchair - the staff were very mindful of our needs throughout and were very kind to my wife at visiting times, as well as ensuring that we had all we needed to cope on my return home.

We were kept fully informed throughout my stay and knew what to expect.

I have received pretty much everything I need to facilitate a speedy recovery and return to work.

We all see the reports of the difficulties within the NHS, and we all see the notices within hospital waiting rooms advising that abuse of staff will not be tolerated.

Our NHS is our most valuable asset, we receive some of the best healthcare in the world absolutely free at the point of delivery and we take that for granted.

The staff do a fantastic job in very difficult circumstances, and I would like to thank all concerned with my care.

Thank you for taking the time to post this feedback. I am sorry to hear of your nasty injury, and of your post-operative complication, but am pleased the staff in all the departments you have mentioned (ED, Trauma & Orthopaedics, DVT Clinic, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy) have worked as a team to keep you informed, meet the needs of you and your wife, and facilitate a speedy recovery.

I have forwarded your comments to the matrons and managers of the services involved, who will be very pleased to pass on your thanks to their teams.
