"Best of care when I had a hip replacement"

About: Derriford Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have had a total hip replacement aged 49yo. This was mainly due to bad luck but possibly not helped by playing football on hard surfaces for years. I was referred to Mr Keenan in Derriford and he was brilliant. It was excellent to have a grown up collaborative conversation about my needs and he said you can have the operation anytime from now onwards. It took about 3 years for the discomfort to get to the point of needing surgery but I was able to contact Mr Keenan again and booked a date shortly after a mini break to get a bit of sunshine! Mr Keenan visited me every day on the ward, his care and attention was really unexpected.

The operation went really well. I had no infection or complication and was able to recover fairly swiftly after a couple of days of discomfort in hospital. The team on Stannon Ward were lovely and some of the care I received with exemplary.

Following discharge I asked for a physio referral for rehab advice as a young (ish) man I wanted to achieve a level fitness and activity more than the average customer!

I saw Shaun - Physio - in Ivybridge Health Centre a couple of times and his input was fantastic - he guided me in ways that I would not have got to without expert intervention. He helped me with a realistic appraisal of my progress, cautioned me about pushing too hard and guided my next steps. Truly invaluable.
