"Excellent surgeon but poor post op care"

About: Wrightington Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

Everything was going so well. Operation was a success. Wonderful consultant. But after returning to the ward and having a mouthful of coffee,

I vomited and felt too sick to eat or drink. The last food or drink I had was on the Sunday night before the op. The next day, I asked for some diluted orange cordial but was given concentrated orange juice and vomited again and felt too ill to eat or drink. By Thursday I was starting to feel cold and shivery. My temperature was too high, my blood pressure way too low, I struggled to speak and I was experiencing double vision. I was taken for an ex-ray and suddenly felt a thirst like I've never experienced before. I got back to the ward and asked for a jug of diluted orange cordial which this time I received. I drank two jugs of it. After that things began to improve and I wondered if I should have been put on a drip but as I have no experience or knowledge of these things I just didn't know.

All I knew was that I felt ill and nauseous with no appetite so couldn't eat or drink. I feel that someone should have been in a position to recognise that I was dehydrated and take the appropriate action before I reached the stage I did.

Thank you for your posting following your recent stay at Wrightington. We are sorry to learn that your post-operative care was not what we would have expected for our patients, and that you have concerns regarding the recognition of your dehydration. We would be very happy to look into this on a more formal basis if you wish to get in touch with the Patient Relations Department on 01942 822376.

Kind regards
