"A and E"

About: Royal Derby Hospital / Emergency department

My friend has suffered with mental health for some time but been badly let down by the NHS GPs ect many times.

111 recommended visiting Derby walk in centre one night.

He was given 2 diazepam and told to see GP.Finaly got appointment to see GP few days later.

He sent a referral to see a psychiatrist but told it takes 4-6 weeks.

No meds.So he didn't last that long.

Rang 111 a few days following this.

111 sent the police, 2 cars 4 police.

despite there being no violence. Police where ok and sent for ambulance which came 4 hours later. He arrived at a&e at 5:30am and was given another diazepam.A nurse asked a few questions for assessment whilst he was high on the medication then discharged him at 9am!!

This was not a mental health nurse who assessed him may I add.

But clearly a standard nurse who could not be bothered.

He went away and returned half an hour later pleading for help.

The receptionist took some pitty and had a word with the nurse whom discharged him.

The nurse and receptionist went into a room to speak.

The receptionist returned to say you just need to go home and go to your GP and get sorted in the community.

This is disgusting treatment for mental health.

We where informed later by our GP that a and e was not a good place to address mental health.!!!!

So where is then????

We didn't know and clearly the NHS didn't either. What a poor society I am sad to say.I don't wish to complain as it gets you nowhere and is pointless.

Just wanted to alert others.

Good Afternoon

Thank you for contacting the Trust about your friend’s recent experience within the A + E department. I would firstly like to say that I am extremely sorry that you have had cause to complain. I appreciate that you will not have done so lightly and I would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. Your feedback is valuable in assisting us to identify areas for improvement. I will be forwarding your concerns to the manager of the A+E Department for investigation.

If you would like to ask your friend to contact PALS directly on 01332 785156 to discuss the matter further that would be most welcome.

Kind regards

Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)
