"Admission to the Gynaecology Dept"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital / Gynaecology

I was recently admitted to the Brighton County General hospital Gynaecology Ward.

At the time I was just under 3 months pregnant and was still too early to be admitted to the Maternity Ward.

I was suffering quite badly with hyperemisis, which is severe morning sickness.

I had lost 15KG in 12 weeks and had continuous vomiting resulting in dehydration and headaches.

My GP admitted me late one evening and I was told I could sleep on the examination table as it was not something people are usually admitted for, this way I could receive fluids and then leave.

In the morning however my tests came back still dehydrated and I needed even more fluids.

I was allowed to go onto the sofa in the waiting room as it was more comfortable and I had barely slept during that night.

In the afternoon around 3pm the Doctor who was dealing with my case decided I needed to stay longer and continue to receive fluids as I was still ver poorly.

I asked the head nurse if I could move onto a bed.

On top of that, none of the staff were able to get the cannula back into my veins as they kept collapsing from dehydration so I feared I may be there another night.

The head nurse said that beds were only available for patients who had been admitted.

A few hours later, with no cannula and still being advised to stay in until more fluids could be given I asked again.

The doctor agreed that I needed to get some sleep and rest so asked I be admitted.

The head nurse agreed to this and left the room leaving the door open.

Literally outside the door I heard them ask another nurse to admit me to which the response came "is that really necessary. Think of all the paperwork I will have to do".

It was pretty upsetting at that point, after I had been pretty patient and understanding.

I proceeded to spend 6 more days in hospital but I have just heard so many bad reviews of the hospital.

Therefore I felt it would worthwhile to leave a review advising women in similar situations to steer clear of Brighton General.

I had my first child in Haywards Heath and after the experience in Brighton will now also do the same this time.

I have also been to Worthing and friends have recommended Worthing hospital as well.

Just a few alternatives for some more friendly and empathetic service.

In general I have never had any issues with any NHS services in fact all other experiences have been broadly positive, but Brighton Hospital has repeatedly let me down and I will try to avoid it from now on.

Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts and I am so sorry to hear about your experience in the Gynaecology ward, this was clearly not acceptable.

If you would like to discuss this further please contact PALS on 01273 664511 or pals@bsuh.nhs.uk

With kind regards
