"Unable to get routine dental check up for children"

About: Montfield Hospital / Dental care

(as a parent/guardian),

Both my children have been on the child smile program since birth which has worked well alternating between seeing the child smile nurse and the dentist every 6 months for check ups and advice. They were due to be seen by the dentist last month as part of the national program. They have been unable to get an appointment with a dentist as montfield is no longer offering routine appointments. I have been advised by the receptionists that management have given them no time scale as to when they will be able to open their books for appointments again and the only way my children can get seen is if there is something wrong with their teeth. I can't quite understand this I thought the main objective of the national program was to prevent tooth decay and help educate children and families around the importance of regular check ups in preventing the need for extensive dental treatment. I also see this has been an issue for other parents in the past and wonder why after this issue was highlighted it still continues to happen. I am very disappointment and concerned that montfield cannot offer routine check ups especially to vulnerable children who have other health concerns that put them at high risk of dental issues. My limited understanding was that the Scottish government funded the national program for child smile and dental check up for children then how are montfield able to close their appointments for children to receive their dental check ups by a dentist?
