I have been taking an elderly patient to the macular clinic every month for the last 7 / 8 years. I had nothing but the highest praise for the department and staff, but during the last 6 months the experience of visits has changed. Today's visit was especially fraught. I almost exploded with anger. I cannot abide, arrogance, ignorance, inefficiency, and an uncaring attitude, especially when old, sick and infirm people are the only losers. I saw this all today. I admit not all the staff are included in my anger, but I hope that maybe the guilty are known and retrained, or moved. I will not name any person, good or bad. I will say that two people tried to be of assistance, not only for my family member, but also another patient. Unfortunately those trusted members of staff who tried too help were also met with indifference, and visibly upset by the response. How this has been allowed too happen, and how it can be resolved is not my place to comment. A once pleasant experience has turned into a " oh hell, I have to go there again next month ". What used to be almost a social visit of about 1 and a half hours has turned into a 3 hour nightmare. Let's remember that most of the patients are in their senior years ( 70/80/90's ), and many people who bring them once a month have to pay exorbitant car parking charges.
Still, it's Christmas, so good will to all?....
