"Enjoying Highbury allotment"

About: Highbury Hospital

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

During my time on the ward, they were quite boring as I had no leave, but I was given some leave eventually, it was enough time to go and enjoy what I did when I was at home and that was gardening.

Going to the Highbury allotment on almost a daily basis helps stabilise my mood and Mental health, I feel more happier and now I don’t need as much PRN medication as I feel the allotment as benefited me throughout my admission in hospital.

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with a member of the ward team about your positive experience whilst an inpatient at Highbury. It is so good to hear of the benefits to you in doing something you enjoy, stabilising your mood and reducing your need for PRN.

I have been privileged to have been involved in the allotment development from the beginning stages in 2014 to where we are now. The Come Grow with me @ Highbury Garden /Allotment was set up in response to patient and staff feedback that there was nowhere for patients to go off the ward but still on site. It was designed and named by patients and has proved to extremely therapeutic for many patients, volunteers and staff since it opened last year.

We are always looking for volunteers to work on the allotment and once your are back living successfully in the community I hope you might consider this as an option for you to get involved. If you do please give the Live Team a ring on 0115 8542262.

I wish you all the best in your recovery,

Suzanne Foulk
