"6 th times a charm"

Well.

I have been in for Ward Park 6 times now so. The first time was voluntary in 2014, where I was kept for 3 1/2 weeks following a life threatening overdose . the staff were amazing apart from one student nurse who said I was lazy for not getting out of bed. (I had severe depression) . The staff treat me and saved my life . I went back a further 5 times 2 times shore drift and 3 times to spring rise . Everytime I went I had no doubt that I was safe , but felt as if nursing staff where rushed off thier feet and speant to much time in the office leaving the care to the HCA and students . like with any hopsital you had your good staff and your staff where you wondered how they got the job . many people have a stereotypical image of a mental health hospital but this isn't the case , the hospital is quiet and safe . As a younger patient I made a lot of friends in thier who helped me through some very dark times , the patients look after each other when the staff cannot do the essential . The junior doctors brilliant but stressed and sleep deprived . The consultants have all the power and the 6 times I have been in with 4 different consultants , some consultants do not listen to the patients. Whilst I understand the stress and complexity of mental health nursing and psychiatry . I feel like we need to listen to patients a lot more . the Barriers I feel start with the uniform of nursing staff , it needs to be a lot more relaxed as this creates a psychological barrier between patients and nursing staff . Overall it's a good clean hospital , with some good staff and some bad staff . I think more money needs to be invested in bed's and crisis teams and nurses .

First visit October 2014 Last visit November 2015

Thank you for posting your story. It seems that you had an overall positive experience of the inpatient services at Hopewood Park, however you did raise some concerns.

The Trust recognises that we need the right staff working into our services and now have a value based recruitment and selection process, which allows us to employ staff with the right values, attitudes and behaviour for the well-being of our patients.

The wards have protected engagement time between 11am -12pm. This gives all nurses the opportunity to spend time with patients. Named nurses can use this time to have 1:1 sessions with their patients and discuss their care and treatment. The Trust recognises the importance of nurses having time to engage with patients. Earlier this year the new engagement and observation policy was introduced.

You felt that the uniforms created a barrier between patients and nurses. I apologise that the uniforms made you feel like this. We have had positive feedback on uniforms and patients and families have said they prefer them as it makes it clear who the nurses are if they need to approach them. I understand that this may not be the same for all patients.

I do hope that you feel the issues raised have been addressed and I would like to thank you for sharing the positive experiences you have had.
