About: Russells Hall Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

we arrived at the above department last night and was disgusted by the state of the initial department. We were greeted by full sick bowls left on seat one empty one with the contents all over the floor. Blood on the floor several people were complaining saying if you hadn't got something when you arrive you will by the time you leave. I went to the toilet and had trouble getting in because there was paper towels over flowing paper towels all on the floor covered in blood and brown stained paper towels which could be anything. The germs which must of been in there was disgusting I have a very low immune problem and left there worrying what I could of picked up it was disgusting and needs looking at urgently.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback about your experience of our A&E Department.

We must apologise if the department was unclean during your visit. What you have described is very disappointing and does not reflect the standards of cleanliness we would expect and wish for our patients.

It is the responsibility of all staff in the department to monitor cleanliness and report problems to nursing staff or via our helpdesk. Routine toilet checks are also undertaken by domestic staff at regular intervals. Unfortunately, this does not appear to have happened during your visit.

We have passed your observations to the matron and lead nurse who have reinforced with their staff the importance of cleanliness, infection control and reporting problems promptly. We have also passed your comments onto the team responsible for housekeeping.

You say it has been reported to staff etc.I still feel concerned as my sister in law came up after myself and had the same experience about week later and she sail there was sick bowls left around used and also mess blood etc on floor so it's still happening. Thanks.
