"Inconsistent practice with eye injections"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I recently had a set of eye injections. I had some concerns about the after effects, I have spoken about this before. The doctor's procedure was to dry the surface iodine away from the eyelid after the three minutes wait, before opening the eye. This is what I know should be done and works very well with little after effects. But most injections you are asked to open the eye before the surface iodine has been dried-up causing the unpleasant after effects. I have asked on a number of occasions for this to be done with no joy as if I did not know what I was talking about. I think a little talk about the procedure to get everyone doing the same procedure would be good. My last injection was good no discomfort thank you

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear chatty,

I am very sorry you have found your care in Opthalmology to be a bit of a 'mixed bag'. I passed your post to the team and management and this is the response

"This is disappointing to hear. Routine practice is to apply the iodine for the 3 minutes, then dry off, as the drape doesn’t stick well if it does not have the chance to dry. I would be happy to look into this further if you wish, in order to avoid/minimise any future episodes. I have forwarded details to the nursing team to make them aware of this concern".

Should you wish to contact me, I can arrange for you to have a chat with the clinician so you can outline any concerns you have with your care in Opthalmology and hopefully this will reassure you for future visits.

I can be contacted by email at - eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222.

Kind regards,

Eunice
