"Operation cancelled on the day due to poor..."

About: Colchester General Hospital

Very disappointed. My mother has multiple allergies which she made clear several times in advance of her operation and again on the day, to the surgeon, nurses and reception. Sometimes they listened, other times her worries were brushed aside. All allergies were documented. After waiting 3 hours she was told that due to her having a latex allergy they can't operate as she had to be done 1st and now faces several months wait (after already waiting almost a year!). I am a healthcare profesional and I can tell you this is absolutely not true! What if she came in via A and E needing emergency surgery? It would be done with latex free equipment which is stocked at all times. So latex allergy makes no difference whatsoever as to when surgery can take place. Plus they knew about this in advance - if they have some rule about doing latex allergy patients first, they should've done her first. It is very worrying that these people are unable to appropriately manage an elective surgery list despite multiple reminders from the patient regarding allergy information, which is extremely important.

I am so very sorry to read about your mother's experience. Please call one of the complaints coordinators on 01206 742881 who would be more than happy to support with an investigation into your experience.

Kind regards
