"Disregard and lack of communication"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My dad had been experiencing shortness of breathe, fatigue, fever, for the past year, his health started to decline further in august, visited gp numerous times started his fifth course of antibiotics, this failed to help, then his breathing became worse which became seriously worrying as he has never smoked and he exercises and works everyday. after a call to nhs 24 they told us to take him to A&E straight away. he was admitted to the new CAU. he could hardly speak due to shortness of breath, his oxygen levels were only monitored every 4 hours with a machine that seemed to be shared with the full ward! when visiting my dad we were told that the suspected tuberculosis on the second day and they were waiting for the results and a bed in the respiratory ward. Visiting on the third day he had sickness and diarrhoea, a sample had been sent to be tested. On the fourth day he called us and told us he was in the waiting room and has been discharged.

No test results where back! my dad was still experiencing shortness of breath. After calling the ward to ask why he was being discharged without results, I was told it was a medical decision and that he has a lower respiratory infection (pneumonia)! . I told the nurse he could hardly breathe and she said he was fine, my dad is not fine! I'm so angry at the total disregard for his well being and lack of communication from this ward.

Its not a question of "if" my dad will be re-admitted but when.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear worriedatnhs,

I am really sorry to hear your Dad is not well and you are unhappy with his care. I wonder if your Dad has had a chance to speak to his GP to ask if his results are available. I spoke to one of the Doctors form the Combined Assessment Unit and her advice is that you could also contact the Consultant your Dad was under, for clarity and more information. You will need your Dad's permission, so it may be best to be with him if you are calling, or get him to call if he is well enough to.

I also wonder if your Dad has a District Nurse helping with his care. A GP consultation may be very fruitful to help your Dad return to health, even if the GP is unable to provide the results and additional information you seek.

I hope your Dad gets better and I hope he does not need readmitted, provided he is well enouh to be recovering at home. It is often the place we prefer to be.

Again, please may I apologies to you and your Dad for the distress and lack of communication.

Best wishes,

Eunice
