My 100 year old friend was admitted from her care home with a suspected chest infection. A carer escorted her at around 2.30 in the afternoon. I returned from holiday and went straight to the hospital for 6.45 where she was still on a trolly in A&E. The carer had to return to the home, and we decided to wait with her until a bed was found. I assumed that after this time and all the relevant tests she would be taken to a ward fairly soon. We asked staff a couple of times how much longer we would have to wait, but no one could give us a proper answer. At around 10.30 my friend become very uncomfortable, in pain and needing the toilet. A nurse took us to the toilet and I said it was terrible that a 100 year old woman should be on the trolly for 8 plus hours. The nurse seemed shocked at her age and it wasn't long after that we were told that she would be moved to a ward. A nurse came to do observations and discovered that an oxygen supply which had caused discomfort for hours had not even been switched on. She was absolutely shattered and finally put in to a bed at 11.15. I am mortified that such a frail 100 year old woman should have to wait on a trolly for over 8 hours and when she needed oxygen someone neglected to even switch it on. The staff are kind and polite but over stretched.
"Unacceptable 8 hour wait"
