"Medical termination"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Sexual Health University Hospital Wishaw / Gynaecology (Ward 13)

(as the patient),

I recently had to use services for an unplanned pregnancy.

My initial contact was with the Sexual Health Clinic in Hamilton. I feel this went well however the doctor I seen gave me the wrong information about where I would attend for my next appointment. She told me I would attend the Early Pregnancy Unit, which worried me as I felt I shouldn't be in the same area as ladies who potentially had problems with a planned pregnancy. I did however have to attend the women's health unit. My first appointment consisted of an initial consultation, a scan to determine gestational age and then another nurse booked me in for the procedure and explained risks etc.

In between the scan and the last consultation, a clinical support worker was calling the patients up to the nurses station to make arrangements for the next step. I was aware of hearing the details of the other ladies gestational age, options for surgical or medical termination and when they would attend for their choice.

Some of the girls were unsure of which option to chose, but made a decision right there at the nurses station in front of everyone. I felt this could have been done more privately. I was also aware of others in the waiting room hearing my choices and plans.

Overall, my experience was as good as could be expected.

The nurse who looked after me on my last appointment was very good. She was professional and knowledgeable.

Dear irnBru,

Thank you for taking the time to feed back. I share your concerns in regards to the lack of privacy when conversations were being had with patients, I can assure you that this will be discussed with the unit staff to ensure that any conversation between patients and staff are carried out in private.

I will also pass on to the staff that you felt that you were looked after by professional and knowledgeable staff.

Regards

Pauline
