I am in my early 70s and have recently been suffering from osteo arthuritis in my thumbs and wrists. It only started about 18 months ago and I haven’t been able to play golf since and I have suddenly become less proficient at DIY! Originally I got in touch with the plastic surgery group at Wexham Park Hospital who, having done an MRI and X Rays on the affected hands decided that I should have Steroid injections in my hand and thumb. This was all done very speedily and efficiently at St Marks Hospital Maidenhead on two occasions last year.
At my next consultation in December 2015, I said that these injections had been ineffective. Recently, I was given an appointment at the day surgery unit at Wexham Park Hospital to have further injections in my thumbs. These were to be placed very accurately with X Ray assistance in Theatre. I arrived in the 9.00 am batch of patients. I was very pleasantly received at reception and throughout the registration was treated extremely well by friendly and professional staff. Nurses Samantha and MaryAnn were extremely attentive. At 12.00 MaryAnn even asked me whether I would like a cup of coffee and some toast, which I was delighted to accept having had no breakfast – responding to the nil by mouth request in the letter, only a local anaesthetic was to be given. Heading for Theatre, Natasha and Sasha gave me excellent service and attention in a very friendly and professional way. In Theatre, Mr Baker was extremely calm, effective and understanding whilst placing the anaesthetic and steroid injections which were slightly painful. And Theatre nurse Halima was kind and delightful as I completed the treatment.
I have never been to an Operating Theatre conscious before – so it could have been a trifle scary, but the staff were all very kind and understanding making me feel very relaxed. Now I await the results of the treatment to allow me to do a bit more in my retirement.
So a big THANK YOU to all involved. (Sorry if I've forgotten some names wrong or neglected others)
