Came into queen Elizabeth hospital, Birmingham, for surgery to little finger of my left hand, had two wedding rings on, so had to be removed, explained to nurse who was filling in paperwork to book me in, that I had tried every method to remove them without success, short of cutting them off, for the past two years, since I separated from my husband, so she took note that I requested the device to cut them off.
I was taken to anesthetic room, where I was met with lovely anesthetist and male nurse, was administered antibiotics and block to my arm, female nurse then came wit cutters for my rings, but, instead of doing as I had asked, was very persistent in her"method" of removing them, I politely told her it wouldn't work, several times, at which point, the anesthetic was kicking in, with that and stress of going into surgery I gave in after several minutes reluctantly, I felt helpless and didn't want to cause a scene, although my arm was numb, I knew she was damaging my knuckle, I kept telling her to stop but she just kept saying its nearly there.
The anesthetist was stood open mouthed shaking her head, till I shouted for her to stop, at which point it was stuck, I had tears in my eyes, I was so upset, I told her to pull it back down and cut it off as I had told her to start with, wouldn't budge, so poured loads of oil on to try and pull it back down, when it did, there was a deep cut the full width of my knuckle, and bleeding!
Nurse had to clean the wound and dress it, I was so angry and upset, not something you want done to you just as you are going in to theatre, especially as I had repeatedly told her to cut the rings off.
so I was cut before the surgeon had even lifted his scalpel.
The anesthetist came to see me in recovery, she said she was so sorry for the nurses actions and that she had put what had happened in her report/write up, I told her she had nothing to apologise for, she was brilliant with me, but I was really angry with the nurse that did it, and her total disregard for my wishes about cutting the rings off as I had requested and the reason the cutting device was brought in the first place
