"Unblievable"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

My daughter was taken to QA by ambulance after a riding accident on Friday 5th June. She had landed very hard on her backside and felt something go in her back. She was in lot of pain. After X-rays we were told there was nothing wrong, she should move as mush as possible and not lay in bed and could go back to riding after 3 days. Take normal ibuprofen she was told and no pain killers were given to us.When she got off the bed she could hardly walk, I was given a wheel chair to get her to the car. She was in complete agony. On the 18th June (13 days after) at 5pm we get a call from the hospital to say they have reviewed her X-ray and can see a compression fracture of the 12 vertebra. They wanted her back that night to check she had not caused any more damage. I will never forgive this hospital for not listening to my daughter, she told them where the pain was. She went to her doctor after 5 days as she was still in so much pain but all she got from them was nothing wrong and she was made to feel like a whining teenager. When I asked how did you miss it the reply was because when they felt down her spine she didn't flinch which put them off track. She is rider and as tough as they come. She told them the pain was 8-9 out of 10. This should not happen

I am very sorry to hear what has happened to your daughter, this is obviously not the standard of care that we normally provide and would really appreciate the opportunity to look into this further.

I will obviously pass your comments to the senior staff in the area involved in your daughter's care and ask them to look into this immediately, but if you would like us to reply to you then could you please contact us privately with your daughter's details. Please either e-mail us on PHT.Complaints@porthosp.nhs.uk or telephone 023 9228 600 (ext 3472). I look forward to hearing from you and once again apologise for the pain and distress that your daughter has suffered.

Kind regards

Marion
