I know that budget cuts have hit the NHS but unfortunately that does not make up for the poor care I received and the lack of cleanliness on the ward. I was referred by my G.P on the Wednesday afternoon, waited for 4 hours to be seen by a surgeon, only then to be told I can't operate today, come back tomorrow. The doctor on duty at the time told me that I will let them know your coming, that's fine I thought, saves me waiting for another 4 hours tomorrow. How wrong I was. Arrived to a ward in chaos, receptionists who had no idea that I was meant to be coming back, and all my files had conveniently disappeared. A nurse proceeded to put me onto a trolley, not even a proper bed, to await being seen. There was no communication between the doctors and nurses, it took an hour for a doctor to even come and talk to me, and then they had no idea what they were doing. Didn't listen to anything I was saying about my infection, just said right you don't need surgery. This is despite their attempts to clear it obviously not working. This doctor's way of tidying up was to leave the used gauze and saline etc. on the 'bed', on my legs. Thank god for the brilliant surgeon for their brilliant bedside manner and telling me what was actually going to be done. As for the ward itself, absolutely filthy. Doctors who don't know where the toilets are, "use the men's" an actual quote from an apparent doctor. And I wouldn't! They hadn't been cleaned for I dread to think how long. A dirty sick bowl full of used surgical equipment in the sink, and a used theatre gown left on the toilet. Some poor lady was desperate for the toilet, it took two of her relatives an hour to get a nurse to take a bed pan for her, despite there being an abundance of nurses on the ward. As for my after care, well I wasn't told anything. Promised a visit from the district nurse, who never came. It took ringing 111 to inform me that actually they won't come unless you are housebound. A visit to the nurse at the local surgery gave me more information, such as that my dressing should of been changed everyday. Not one word of that was said at all in the 12 hours I spent in the hospital. The correct dressings were not even provided in the after care bag for the non existent district nurse. I would of got quicker and better care if I had taken myself to a and e.
