"My recent colonoscopy experience at QMC"

I'm a 61 year old woman and have had Crohn's disease for many years. I have annual check-ups and a colonoscopy every few years to see what's going on in there.

My most recent colonoscopy was in May 2009 in the wonderful new Treatment Centre at the QMC in Nottingham. The staff are always very kind and friendly. I was a little apprehensive beforehand even though I've had several colonoscopies before - we'd all prefer not to need them of course, but it's reassuring to know our cases are kept under review and that investigations take place to spot any potential signs of trouble.

It was all very straightforward and afterwards the endoscopist told me my bowel was "beautiful", which is not a compliment one receives every day! Several weeks later I saw my lovely consultant, Dr Chris Hawkey, who told me that my bowel was normal, as were the biopsies taken, which is wonderful news of course.

I would like to reassure anyone who is having a colonoscopy for the first time that there's really nothing to worry about. It doesn't take long and is painless due to the sedation they give you - you can choose not to be sedated if you prefer but I like it. It makes you a little woozy but you are conscious throughout.

All in all a very positive experience.
