"Labour ward staff are fantastic"

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital

I went into hospital for induction 12days overdue on a Monday morning in July ! As it happened I was contracting, dilating and the midwife broke my waters around 2 hours after I arrived which I was so happy about! I was moved up to labour ward and honestly all the staff I met were brilliant to me and my partner the whole labour (16hours). My midwife was accompanied by a student midwife, which at first I was a little unsure about, but the student was brilliant and so lovely getting me through each contraction. I had 2 epidurals during my labour which neither of them worked. I asked for more pain relief and wasn't given any, luckily has and air got me through it. My baby was born just before midnight and a few hours after we were moved into the transitional care unit for observation as both baby and I had high temperatures and blood pressure. I felt very alone on this ward, as a new mum I had no idea really how to care for my baby. I was exhausted trying to breastfeed baby, but was struggling to get baby to latch. Everytime I asked one of the midwives for help I felt like I was an inconvenience to them. I wasn't even told I had to or how burp my baby. On my second nights stay on that ward I pressed my buzzer and it took 3 times to get the attention of the staff in the early hours as I couldn't settle my baby, and the response I got was "you need to learn yourself, we don't come home with you" which really upset me. And also the food that I had during my stay was all awful. My sheets were never changed during my whole stay, and by the 3rd day were filthy. All in all I loved labour ward and all the staff on that ward, but the transitional care unit didn't make me feel comfortable at all. Hopefully my next baby I will be in and hour and not have to stay on the ward for after care!

Hello, thank you for your feedback. This has been shared with the general manager for women's services and the head of maternity. It's lovely to hear you had a very positive experience on the labour ward but some of your issues with the transitional care unit are more concerning. Please could I ask you to contact our patient advice and liaison team on 01724 290132 or nlg-tr.pals@nhs.net to discuss these more fully? Kind regards, Sarah Mainprize
