"poor hygiene"

About: Southmead Hospital

My Dad is currently in a ward in the new building. Last night, he had an accident in his bathroom which needed urgent cleaning. A telephone call was made to the cleaners to come as soon as possible but no one came to clean the bathroom for 5 hours. A few points I would like to raise: 1: This is very degrading to my Dad 2: This risks infection- is infection prevention not on your agenda? 3: What if my Dad needed to go again? It would have been absolutely diguisting for him. I am so disapointed. Patients having their own bathrooms seems such a perk, but it seems that as they are not communale, the cleaning of the bathrooms i left to the last task on what I am sure is a long list. Waiting 1 hour is acceptable. Waiting 5 hours is not.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for posting your comments. I absolutely agree that it is not acceptable for any delay in cleaning bathrooms anywhere within the new building. One of the reasons for the individual facilities is precisely to assist with infection control, something that has been at the heart of the hospital design. It is fair to say that some issues associated with the new ward layout are proving challenging, and that processes are still being refined to ensure optimum patient experience and care. I know any ward matron would be disappointed that the cleaning by the domestics was delayed and I have feedback your comments, but unfortunately you do not name the area or gate/ward concerned.
