My wonderful indoor/outdoor powered wheelchair was becoming dangerous to use. After 4 and a half years it had been worked into the ground and the manual tilt mechanism was inoperable and it had no manual switch. The OT at Wheelchair Services immediately recognised the issues in relation to the muscle weakening nature of my condition Becker Muscular Dystrophy.
Despite my carer not turning up for my morning call I still managed to get to my Wheelchair Services appointment and I guess the effort I made has been duly rewarded. I have a nice shiny new Sunrise indoor outdoor powered wheelchair on order. From the phone call I made only 4 weeks ago to the waiting time for delivery I am so happy as it has taken such a weight of concern off my mind.
Well done Wheelchair Services Sheffield - I'll also let the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign know about how helpful the service has been as they do such brilliant awareness work and have been fighting for better support of Wheelchair Services all over the country.
As someone with a neuromuscular condition whose life depends on the use of a chair suited to their condition this was such a great experience. I do hope the services elsewhere in the country are of a similar high standard. Brings a whole new meaning to the word 'Quickie'! ?
