"minor injury unit"

About: Altrincham General Hospital

visited on Tuesday 29th July, was seen by a nurse who said she didn't know if I had a break or not but thought it unlikely. she couldn't xray it as person had rung in sick, I insisted on an x ray and returned later in the day for one. saw a different nurse who was fantastic - she put hole in nail to releive pressure (previous nurse did not mention that) Xray confirned break. she had to put a large finger stall on due to swelling and told me to go back to get smaller one if it started to move - which it has. Rang last night and was told to call in today, which I did only to be told that the nurses from yesterday were on duty today and I'd have to book in! there were several people so wait would have been ages, I didn't have time to wait & explained what I'd been told but was told it wasn't possilble to just collect one! wasted trio and again shoddy csre. I am left with a break and a stall that is far to big so not giving any protection

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope on your visit to the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Altrincham Hospital on the 29th July 2014. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

It is unfortunate that due to staff absences there was limited access to radiology services on this date which led to patients being asked to return to the clinic later in the day. However, the issues were resolved as soon as possible and the first patient was x-rayed before 09.30 am. I am pleased to hear that you had your x-ray and the nurse you saw on your return cared for you to your satisfaction.

We are sorry you were not given the correct information with regards to follow up treatment. The nurse who you saw on the unit should have advised you to return should the splint become loose due to the reduction in swelling, post injury and that all patients returning to the unit have to book in again, including patients returning to the dressing clinics. Due to the unpredictable workload of the MIU, patients do sometimes have an unavoidable wait. The person you spoke to on the phone was correct as we are unable to give out any appliances from reception as appliances need to be correctly fitted and applied by a clinician to ensure that they are safe and fit for purpose.

It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk
