Whilst accompanying a relative in the department I was extremely disturbed, and quite frankly appalled to overhear a very loud conversation taking place at the nurse's station between a lady who I believe to be a senior nurse, and two other nurses regarding a patient who had attempted suicide. I was disgusted to hear the nurse very loudly berating people who take overdoses, stating that it was "about time somebody published guidelines on how to properly kill yourself", and that people who feel suicidal should just "get on with it" and not come to A&E. I work in mental health, and could not believe what I was hearing. With 1 in 4 people experiencing mental health issues, I find this level of ignorance disgraceful, and completely unacceptable, and particularly from somebody in a senior position. I was astounded when two other nurses then responded in agreement, stating that people who overdose were just "attention seekers". These individuals give nursing a bad name, and should be taken to task, and required to actually receive some of the education that they so clearly lack. If these are the kind of ignorant, nasty, and judgemental people that Northwick Park employs, then I will certainly be giving it a wide berth. Disgraceful.
"Shocking lack of professionalism"
